A couple of good reference books that cover some of what you guys intuitively knew or already know:

"Race Car Chassis Design and Construction" - Forbes Aird
"Competiton Car Suspension Design Construction-Tuning" - Allan Staniforth
"xxxxxx" - Carroll Smith

These are all geared towards roadrace cars and the Staniforth book really only hits on chassis design in relation to suspension.

Rather than welding in trianulation bars, I've seen people get fairly creative with honeycomb, kevlar and some of the new ambient setting epoxies that are available. So that is another option to consider when trying to stiffen a chassis.

Good info though and its nice when people post up examples, both right and wrong. I'm so digging this site already.
