It's a nightmare for the people and their families that were killed or injured, and I feel terrible for them, but I always thought the Rhino was primarily built as basically, a hopped up golf cart. Then as people started taking them out, came the market for parts and suspension that made them perform better and safer off road, but there were still those who would take the stock ones out and they do roll.
I know Yamaha has recalled them to add doors and a few other things to make the stock ones a little safer, but I wouldn't take one off road unless it was set up right.

How many of the deaths were caused from not wearing seat belts? I can understand the leg fractures etc, as there was no doors etc....

Stupid is as stupid does IMO. Always someone wanting to blame others for their own actions. Then we all pay for the idiots.

I've seen the class action lawsuit ad on TV from some bottom feeding firm. I see the UTV's on the sand. They have no appeal for what I want to do with a sand toy.

These machines were NEVER made for half the things these idiots were doing with them. I have to agree with Fabr here in saying that the fools were trying to have fun pushing the envelope then screwed up and its of course not thier fault. So due to frivolous lawsuits the price of these machines goes thru the roof as well as others. Instead of a $10.000 rhino these idiots should have been buying a 30,000 dual seat mini rail to do what they were doing. But they tried to save a few bucks and do silly crap and loose life and limb. Not that it would likely help but buyers should be forced to sign a waver saying a utiliy machine is and will be used just for that. Not huge jumps and highspeed corners in rough terrain.

I do not feel sorry for them too much. These (Rhinos) were made and sold as UTILITY machines. Not racers. I would greatly prefer that these fools did not ride where I do. I have see popel think just cause there is a rollcage (no matter how good or bad it may be built) they are invulnerable. Bill

It's gotten to the point that everyone needs to sign a frigging waiver for everything we do in life because of the way we've set up the system. When you think about it, it's actually set up for the bottom dwellers. You might get hurt on the job that you took when you knew the risks, someone might not pay attention and slip & fall on your property, You might even say something to someone in passing that's taken out of context, someone can sue you falsely and you have no recourse but to hire another bottom dweller to defend you. The list goes on & on.

The reason I feel sorry for them, especially the families, is because they weren't intelligent enough to realize the danger they were putting themselves in by taking a utility type vehicle and use it for purposes it wasn't designed for. Most of these people just signed on the dotted line keeping up with the Joneses, without any prior experience or training. A lot like quads, jet skis or any other sit & go machine you can get hurt with that you can buy for $89/mo.

imo

I'm gonna have to chime in here.....
I own an 06 rhino I got it for a utility/trail machine I chose it over a mule for it's "fun" posibilities. with 1.7 hours on the meter my daughter rolled itover 1and 1/2 times going way too fast around a corner on a gravel road I had just told her and her sister to put their seat belts on. neither of the girls were hurt but my rhino well it broke a cv joint and had a years worth of scrapes and busted plastic.
a few months latter I met an internet buddy at the Coos bay Dunes (1 hour drive) and from that day till present I've been hooked on sand. Last year My 25 year old son wants to take his girlfrind for a ride around our property and honestly he a bit wild and careless ... But i didn't want to always say no. I told him "I'm going to the dunes Tomorrow so be careful and go easy" whithin 10 minutes I'm looking out my kitchen windo to see him doing donuts in the gravel driveway and know he's gonna go over. before I could get out there and tell him to knock it off he's flopped it on it's side and his girl puts her leg out and wham a nasty compound fracture.
here another year latter and the meat wagon chasers are out trolling for "victems" to cash in on.so guess whos seeing dollar signs I can forsee a big A$$ mess with home owners insurence and subpoenas depositens ect
To make matters worse there are ethics issues my Son needs to learn as a part of his maturing process TAKING RESPONDSIBILATY is a big part of it. so why growup when you can cash in and keep projecting blame on others.

Me, I've floped my rhino one time nobody got hurt and I pretty much knew it was gonna happen. My wife got out and watched while I had my fun. Rhinos are safe if you use some sense driving them and STAY INSIDE THE ROLL CAGE! as for making the rhino into a dune blaster? Not gonna happen, that's why I'm here I'm gonna build something for my wild side.

A good first hand story. I love to see people have fun but hate to see them get hurt.
Therer is talk that Yamaha is going to increase the tread width to Polaris dimensions with should alleviate some of the problems.
I read a month ago they were involved in 2300 claims for injuries

You said it, I agree, and good to hear from someone who's been there. Glad to hear your daughters weren't hurt and sorry to hear about your son's girlfriend. Hope she's OK.

There may very well be a few incidents in the lawsuit that warrant an investigation into the product, but on the other hand the vast majority, imo, are there for the free ride called Greed.
