So, in a nutshell, shoulder belts hold you BACK in the seat and slightly down. Which corresponds with the mounting point. Trying to hold you down by the shoulder belts has potential to compress the spine. Lap belts hold you DOWN?

Yes but I would add lap belt holds you down AND back, crotch belt keep the lap belts in proper position at the pelvis.

Dont forget shoulder padding. Get the ones sewn in not the crappy slip on ones. Call me a wuss but they can make a long ride much more comfortable.

Sunlight is the killer of belts. If they have been stored properly and are in good physical condition, they will last 10 years or more. The ones that are going in My buggy are 11 years old and look like new.

BTW, you can send your old belts in and have them inspected and recertified..... If they pass.......

You want the shoulder pull to be no lower than 3" below your shoulder height as you sit in the car. Lower than that and you start getting a downward force from them and it also lets your shoulders move forward. The two actions pretty much squish your spine, which is definitely not good.

As far as upwards? Not really sure.

Do NOT do that. K-fab is right but optimum is AT shoulder height but with different drivers the 3" rule is good so the belts will function properly for a larger range of drivers without compromising safety. Race belts should never be above the shoulders IMO.

Besides, it looks like a noose – never a good call to willingly slip a noose over your head.
