To go along with the Engine Weight topic, I am curious how many know how much their frame weighs. No front arms, or rear arms, just the tubes making up the frame and cage.
I am trying to finish up the final cad design before getting started, and I have a tendency to use a lot of tubes. I will probably post a 3d file of it pretty soon, but I am up to 180#'s and still have a few tubes to add. I am all for safety, and not too worried about trying to go 100mph, but I do like quick acceleration. (ex drag racer  ) At any rate, I am just curious how heavy other peoples frames are. Mine is a 2 seater, but interested in all styles. |

It isn't so much as going 100 mph, it is the sudden stop from 100 mph that posses the problem.
A few people have lawn darted their rails, both mini and full size and not lived to tell about it. 18+ inches of travle does you no good when you hit nose first or land on your roof and collapse the unsupported "A" or "B" pillars. Having rolled my mini, I can tell you that you have absoulutely NO TIME to react to anything. Even after it stopped it took a moment to figure out which way is up and what seemed like an eternity to unhook the harness. If there was a fuel leak and a fire, I am not sure that I would have made it out in time. just my .02 worth. |

I consider that to be worth way more than 2 cents.
You bring up some very good safety questions. Do you want your rail to go faster than it can survive a crash from? How much fuel do you want to carry onboard? Why was the roll cage not fully supported? Is your battery hold down strong enough to keep it from arcing out in a crash,or rollover? Are the mounts for the seats and five point harness strong enough to work when you realy need them? We could go on with this forever but I hope that this is the kind of things that everyone is keeping in mind already as they design and build. P.S. If you keep the steering behind the wheels you have a much less risk of getting harpooned in a frontal crash!!!!!!!!!! |
