Maaaan, am I glad this forum exists! :)

At SEMA this year, I ran into some King of the Hammers folks (Jessi Combs and Chris Ridgway) and got talking about buggies. Not to mention SEMA just lubes up your wallet-pocket for some reckless spending.

The seed was planted.

I stumbled across a rolling FL250 chassis for $100, and I got the "itch" to build up a budget buggy. So I bought a 2nd FL250 which had the donor-drive-train and some other goodies for $100 and pick it up tomorrow. And my best pal just happened to have a strong running Yamaha ET340 and the rest of the '77 Enticer sled. :D So far $200 invested.

My first plan is just to get the FL250 running with the ET340. Got a a new psiton/ring/gasket set for the motor, fresh plugs, cleaned carb, etc. Tack on another $75 investment. After some welding and some plumbing and wiring and tuning, the ugly-buggy will be ready to for some fun...maybe before Thanksgiving (i've got a couple of very motivated buddies).

The plans for the 2nd frame and axle are to experiment with suspension and disc brakes. We have some spare suspension parts and some spare motorcycle disc brake sets to tinker with, not to mention all kinds of tubing and iron.

If the buggy rides fine, and, we get the brakes and rear suspension to work...the plan is to transfer everything to the better suspension and brakes, test it, tweak it, ride until we break it, fix it, repeat that cycle 6-7 times, tear it apart completely, and then transform the ugly duckling a rolling beauty.

I pre-apologize for any stupid questions. Consider me ignorant. :p

I'm from Perrysburg, Ohio (southern 'burb of Toledo) and I work for Honeywell in supply base purchasing 'stuff' for our brands FRAM, Autolite, and Prestone (no I can't get you free stuff). I'm a U of Toledo mechanical engineer by degree; buyer by day; tinkerer by night/weekend. I love small vehicles and pneumatics, however, last year I did manage to install an adjustable airbag suspension on a "not-so-small" vehicle, a 27,000lb 1979 MCI Crusader 40' bus (our 2nd NASCAR bus). Basically, I like fun projects. However, between grad school, work, and planning a wedding...manly projects are few and far between these days.

I'm looking forward to telling new horror stories, lessons learned, and new excuses for spending more money. [smilie=ecstatic.gi:

Hey guys and thanks for letting me into the forum. I am big on restoration projects, so this is my first trip into actually building something. I have restored my 1971 Honda Z50 back to probably better than original, Ill post some pics if anyone cares to see, I restored a couple of boats and a 1987 Honda Fourtrax 125 for my daughter. I just purchased a very good running Honda 1986 Fourtrax 350 4x4, and planned on restoring it, but then came across the bugggy idea. My idea at this time is to start with this Honda 350 engine and what ever other parts possible and build a 4x4 4-wheel independent suspension minny buggy. I do want it to be a 2 seater....I've looked at the plans from ubuild it of their 2 seter full suspension buggy. the good thing is the Honda engine has 6 speed forward and reverse and auto clutch which should be ease enought to build a linkage for that. It also has splinned shafts forward and back. Im not sure how to work the drive train though, as the old honda just has the strait axels front and back. So I am wide open to suggestions on that! And staying in what seems to be the moto of this forum I want to keep it as cheap as possible. And I do know that I could probably buy something cheaper, but what fun is that!!! Most of the places this will be ridden is on Forrest roads and trails, so I want to keep the width below 60"

HI all, my names louis, I've lurked around awhile but have finally decided to hop in the ring. Im hoping to someday build a r1 powered long travel yamaha G9 just because I love my golf cart and can't wait to blow past the cars and rails! At the moment my thoughts are only that because I have to rebuild the engine in my 1991 mr2 seeing that the previous owner didn't like the rod where it was so he decided it would work better jutting out the oil pan[smilie=dunno.gif] hopefully by december I'll have that done and be buying a r1 engine by then lookin forward to the experiance! I'll keep browsing until then!!!
No builds of my own yet, just the school's rigs, but its still fun. Just dropping in here to say hi.

Hi all! I am totally new to this but I am looking for a new hobby and this minibuggy idea has grabbed my attention. I have no fabrication experience, but I am mechanically inclined. I have put together a sandrail in the past. I say put together because I bought the chassis complete and built it from there. I have a Hobart Handler 140 that I bought a few months ago. So far all I have used it for is to build my welding cart (I'm impressed, but then I again I am easily impressed :D).

Well I got bored of my jeep and sold it so I have about $2K to start playing with. I figure that will get me going and hopefully the money to complete it will come when it is needed. I have a ton to learn so I'm glad I found this site, but to start here are my questions:

If you were brand new to this and wanted to build your first buggy where would you spend your first $2K?

Do you need an engine to build around or do you buy plans that are specific to engines?

Thanks in advance for any information and for all that I am bound to learn from the boards!

Hi to all!
I am relatively new to the MiniBuggy world, although not new to off road fun. I have been involved in dirt bikes and quads since I was a little tot and wheel my truck excessively. I have been toying with the idea of a mini for a while and since I am currently laid up with a shattered knee (from an off road mishap) I found this site while doing some searching for info. I must say this is an absolutely fantastic site so far and I look forward to wringing it out for tons of info. I am a qualified welder and have worked in industrial type fabrication shops so I do know my way around most things mechanical but am wanting to learn as much as possible. Living in northern CA, I travel mostly fire roads and trails, not much experience with sand. OK, enough of me for now, thanks for the opportunity to introduce myself!

hi my name is Brandon i'm from northern Ontario, Canada, i'm a new member to this site but ive been reading the post's off and on for a couple years and i've already been on asking questions, but i've never introduced myself. I'm located in a remote area , my drive to work is an hour long on a TRX 250 R, so naturally my hobby has always been building and driving little gokarts and little dune buggies "not like the ones on this site", but in the last 6 or 7 years ive accumulated more tools and built myself a little shop,"14'x24' " and started moving higher in difficulty and now i'm here. my buggy is still in the beginning stages i guess alot more work ahead, but its a good thing i found this site to be able to get answers to all my dumb questions. this project has a 2002 GSXR 750 engine so its a big step up for me with all the sensors and electronics and high HP its pretty exciting and i havent even started the engine yet. Anyway her are a couple pics of my buggy so far.

Hello, my name is Ben, go by Wild Earp on the forums. I have a 06 Rhino that I have built for racing over the last few years. I just sold my 686cc 50 HP race motor and all associate parts, in order to swap in a 172 HP Yamaha R1 motor. I will be racing short course in the SR1 class (which is designed for race rhinos using a stock R1 motor, 02-08). I will also be doing some desert racing.

Currently I am getting all the parts together, starting with a 05 R1 with 8500 miles I got off ebay. I have almost everything, except for the header, which I will probably custom make. I am just waiting on my motor mount plates, and rear carrier to get started with the fab.

I have already started to mod my harness, and have put in reverse swing CNC pedals, that will be adapted to use the stock master cylinder, and a Morse style clutch cable.
