I've heard about this sh*t happening to people, just never me..

So last night, flipping through craigslist looking for good deals as usual, end up a few states away in the tool section and I come across an ad. 12 foot Wysong air shear and 12 foot Chicago brake for sale, call for more info (no pricing, no pics). I call the guy up, he tells me they were in an old mobile home manufacturing building that went out of business a few years back, been sitting there ever since. The building just got sold and the new owners paid this guy to get rid of whatever was left, which was these 2 big items and a couple radial saws.

I'm thinking, cool, gonna be way outta my price range (seen these shears sell for over 10k, brakes sell for around 9k or more), but i'll go ahead and ask for sh*ts and giggles. The guy says, well, I don't really know what their worth, was hoping someone would tell me, then he says....

wait for it...........

$500 each sound ok?

So just to make sure I heard him right, I say (as calm as I possibly could, and like i'm only partially interested) so 1 thousand dollars for the set? He says yeah, that sound ok? I said, ok, i'll take them, how much do they weigh, and can you possibly load them for me if I get a shipper out there? He says, well, shooting from the hip i'm thinking about 1,000 pounds each, they look pretty heavy?

So yeah, this guy really didn't know what he had (the 8 foot brake I currently have weighs over 3k pounds). I told him I was gonna make a few calls and get shipping setup for tomorrow morning. I got online and found out the brake weighs 3,800 pounds, and the shear weighs 6,300 pounds, so I call the guy back and ask him if someone around there has a big forklift that can handle over 6,300 pounds, and luckily the guy across the street had a 20k forklift and said he'd help him. I called a shipping company last night, paid them up front ($925 for extremely short notice, lol), took them the 1k cash to give the guy, and the trucker left at 3 am this morning, got there are 9 am, and was loaded up and on his way back by 9:30. So, 4:00 rolls around and my 2 new tools just showed up. Already hooked them up and they work awesome, prob. gonna stick a new paint job on them, have some new extensions built for the shear, and i'll be good to go..

As I said, i've heard of this kinda stuff happening to people, but never actually happened to me.............

until now...

over 14 foot long each and hella fun to unload....

Just got a smokin deal on a 13" x 36" Clausing lathe with tons of tooling and a 60 pc. 5C collet set/chuck. Bearings have no play, bed ways have no ridges, gears/screw are sharp, and nothing binds. The old man that sold me the lathe was liquidating his machine shop for retirement and gave me a great deal; all for $800.00

One of the great things about this lathe is that parts are still produced for it!

This is my first one and I am itching to start making some chips. First project will be turning some stub axles for 930 flanges. [smilie=non_banana2:

Mini Buggy Fixture Table 4th day

Ok so I have been needing to build this for some time now and I am finally building it. The table will fixture my frames true and straight. It will...

Ok so I have been needing to build this for some time now and I am finally building it. The table will fixture my frames true and straight. It will also help speed up the building time as I can only fit something in one way and don't have to re-figure things ten times, measure 10 times etc. I will now be able to build the same car with several options evertime.

As the frame is being built so is the table. The table is being built around the frame and being made into one giant fixture and probably several small fixtures at the same time. So when done I will have one mini buggy built and one fixture table.
For here on all frames will be the same and be able to drop off say at my body guy and have bodies made for them, a arms standard for them and rear trailing arms all standard.

Fixture table is made from 2x2 inch by 1/8th inch square steel, so it will hold my frames in place so I can clamp them to the fixture table and not get any warping or bending. All frames will match and be the same so for example you can buy a frame and later order say a body I can then have a body built off of one of my frames and shipped out to you for your car.

Here is where I am at so far.
The table is square, true and level to my shops floor... (no levelers yet that will be an upgrade later.. but it is square and level for where it is at.)

The center tubes are now held in place and can be clamped down and welded.
Tabs hold the center straight and true and the taller front tabs keep the tubes straight after I put the up rake on the two center tubes.

Picture of what I have so far.

You can see all the tabs I have already started adding. I will keep adding these as I build the car and as each piece of metal is bent and added to the frame I will add them to the fixture table and so next time I build the frame it will be true and can only be built within those tabs. So if I bend wrong or get off somewhere then I will know. Pretty cool.
Also if it is possible I am going to try to tie in a single seater frame into this table so it will
have its own tabs etc.

Also why I am at it I talked about a arms and rear arms.
Well I have a fixture table set up so I can make different size arms and parts.
The table is a thick sheet of aluminum with 1,500+ water jetted holes in it so I can move around parts and pieces to make up new arm sizes and what not.

Here take a look at this little fixture table I will be setting up and using soon.

Well just thought I would share as I have not posted to much on mini buggies lately. But I just want everyone to know I am working on them I am just working behind the scenes getting all my shop and parts etc. built and set up so I can build and do mini buggies. Mostly so they work awesome and are fun but also so they look good of course.

I'm working towards building a buggy and intend to learn (probably the hard way, I'm like that) as much about every aspect of the build. My first challenge is turning out to be the rearend. Right or wrong that's were I'm starting. Made a center cassette added inner tripod cvs, looking at lengthening my axles (there only 13-3/4" spline to spline). Made outer bearing supports with the rest of cv stub axle. Now I was trying to juggle all this together without a frame to work from. I'm doing a set of a-arms so I decided to build a fixture to mock the setup. It's still in the unfinished stage but I was wondering what some of you folks thought as means to an end. In the pictures if you can't see them well they are very adjutable in all directions (up, down width and spread) because I want to get the most travel out a short distance as this style of cv is not very kind to travel. What do you think?[smilie=strokin.gif][smilie=rofl.gif][smilie=whistle.gif] Yes the a-arms are EMT they are an idea I got here to use before cutting the real stuff.
