The only problem is I am having trouble actually finding companies who sell them. Am I just looking in the wrong place?

I think I've been suckered. Just picked up this FL350 a couple weeks ago, and have been doing little things on it here and there. I've just ridden around the yard a bit, haven't gone anywhere with it.

The previous owner said they added transmission oil because it was "pretty low". They topped it off up to the fill hole. I drained a bunch out tonight, and found it is just full of metal particles. The flakes are steel, not aluminum (or not only aluminum) because the stick to a magnet. They are very fine particles, but there's a lot of them.

Is there anything specific to FL350's that causes this? The transmission seems to operate fine, I wouldn't have noticed anything if I hadn't checked the oil. Is this tranny ready to grenade? Should I stop riding it and tear it apart?

Im building a mini rail with an R1 with Honda civic tranny and was wondering if there were any suggestions on chain and sprocket sizes. I am thinking 630 chain but can't find sprockets with hubs i can attach to my setup. Would a industrial #60 or 60H be as good as a 630 (there are plenty of weldahub sprocket setups for 60 chain)? Another question is, could a 630chain be used on a 60 sprocket? Anyone using a taperlock sprocket? I plan on using a 16 tooth front and 18tooth rear or something close. Any input would be useful.

Hi guys, what's the scoop on EGT gauges? I can certainly see the benefits, for tuning, etc, but are they really necessary for just general riding? Reading the odysseysalvage.com digitron page, it sounds like I shouldn't even be riding this thing without an EGT. Are they that critical?

I've got an FL350 I just picked up, with some aftermarket parts including a pipe and water cooled head with a thermostat and electric water pump. The motor seems to run really well, and the seller said it was rebuilt last summer with very little riding time since then.

I'm headed to the dunes in a couple weeks, am I in serious danger of a meltdown without an EGT gage?

Hello all,

I am from Michigan, metro Detroit area. I built a VW powered rail with my father when I was about 14 years old and am finally getting back into it after about 25 years. I am an avid snowmobiler and dirtbiker. The time has come to get rid of the street legal dirtbike so I started to look into a new beam rail and came across the long travel mini buggies during that time. Long story short after a few searches on Craig'slist, I found a partially completed project and last night just bought a Desert Karts Panther basket case build. The frame is welded, 2 of the four front arms, the rear swing arms, most of the machining for live axle and cv mounts, rims and tires front and back, a 1979 Honda CB 750 motor with about 3 boxes of other assorted goodies.

I have already spent, in the last few weeks, more hours reading on here than I should admit. With that being said, I cannot believe how much good info I have already picked up and how much more is yet to come.

I will be compiling a "to do list" and a "needed to still get" list and a "how do you do that" list in the very near future and will get a few photos and start a build thread.

Thankfully, I am a sign designer and fabricator with a great shop and some CNC machinery amongst other helpful equipment. The one thing I will be banking on is being able to pick the brains of the many great and experienced builders on here for the times when the head scratching gets too tough.

I just picked up a FL350, that has a watercooled head, aftermarket pipe, etc, and was rebuilt last summer. It runs great, and fires up immediately once it's been run a little bit, but it's hard to start when it's been sitting for a day or two. With the choke full on, when it's cold, it will crank for 6-10 seconds before it fires up. If I use starting fluid, it fires immediately and runs fine, but I hate to use that stuff. I also hate to burn up the starter, which I just did a few days ago.

I was thinking of putting an outboard motor primer bulb in the fuel line to squirt some fresh gas in the carb before starting it. The primer could be either in the line between the pressure T and carb, to fill the float bowl, or in a separate line to feed fuel directly into the carb intake.

Have any of you had the same problem, and have you tried a primer bulb like this with any success? Are these FL350's notoriously hard to start? My old FL250's were always a pain to get started.

I can't think of a better section of trail to have this event on...The race will start at 4 and end at 8,meaning it will conclude in the dark,so good lights will be a must...We currently have 2 cabins reserved and can accomodate up to 12 people, but we need to know who is in and who is not pretty quick...You don't have to race, and there will be plenty of riding during the days we are there, but the race is just an added benefit...There will also be live music that night on the outside stage,as well as other activities during the weekend....Here's the link...
Im not sure im on the right forum since i am a lover of chenowith sand rails- preferably old school.

so ill tell you what ive got. i think that my 2 seater chenowith frame is from the seventys and i know that the engine i just put in is a 70' vw bug motor. the trans mission doesnt go in reverse and theres some jb weld next to where the trans-axel goes in the trany. the rear tires are 33x11 and the front are very narly kinda like 1940 army jeep.
When i first got the frame i took it to the top of my long steep driveway and on just the front rims and some tires on the back with no motor, no seetbelts and the gas tank and seets werent even bolted in proceded to roll it down the hill with my 19 yr old buddy passenger.
there was a large embankment which i thaught would be fun to hit going about 30mph we shot up it and the passenger side hit a small oak causing us to cork screw on to our top. then we looked up and saw a monstrus bees nest in the tree that we just rolled in to. we managed to get out of there without any injuries.
As a newbie to this site this is one exsmple of my exciting/stupid ideas but hey i think it was fun![smilie=ecstatic.gi: If you get this and itnot appropriate to the occasion= Im new and havnt figured this out yet

Since I plan on using a similar set up in my build what I need is to find out, measured from the forward edge of the engine to the center of the Flange on the Differential.

I could also use the same measurement from the forward engine mount to the center of the Flange on the Differential.

I need to provied these to John at Mosebilt so when he builds my frame he can build the trailing arms.
Thanks,

Hey all, this is Jason with SCU|MS... this is our 3rd year competing in the baja (the last year was 2003) and are looking for a fresh start. We already have gotten significant headway on the frame and are looking to finalize our components list. Since we don't really have a legacy of old cars and cad files to work off of, we have to start from the ground up this time around. The parts we are in dire need of direction of are the front (and rear) uprights, corresponding hubs and calipers and the transmission (as we do not want to machine those parts...).

As a teammate and i went looking around for part costs yesterday, we came across the idea that, if we go with the uprights, calipers, hubs (and consequentially disk brakes) from that particular manufacturer, whether it be from a quad or most likely some sort of utility atv, then we would be able to focus on the design and optimization of the other components/frame and the integration as a whole package. Everything would mesh together nicely as far as contacting the road goes and the only things we would have to match up would be the design of the a-arms and the cv interface for the rear. *Ive heard that a suspension system designed with heim joints is "tougher" than a comparable one that uses ball joints... is this true? I ask because most of the heavy duty-type quad atv's were using the ball joints....

As far as driveline goes, we were going to go with the CVTech cvt that is specially designed for baja. Then run that to a transmission with a forward speed and AT LEAST reverse. If possible, we would like to have a low range if possible. Are there any specific transmissions that any of you have used that pertain to our wants? Perhaps a small motorbike tranny? i really don't know what to look for so a point in the right direction would help a lot!

since we ARE looking for all of these parts, does anyone here have an atv in mind that has these features? It would be really nice to buy a quad for around a grand or less to piece out these parts.

thank you so much for reading.... it would be a big help if you all could offer anything and/or respond to my questions.

thanks again!
jason

Hello,

For my Badland ST2 build I bought tires and rims.

For the rear I use a Volkswagen VR6 rear drive line with a 5/100 bolting pattern.
Here in The Netherlands you can't buy rims with that bolting pattern.. not from quads:mad:

So I bought holeless rims. But do you guys know how I can drill these? In a machineshop? Or CNC milling? Please advise:o

The front bolting pattern is 4x156 from the wheel hubs I ordered from The Edge.
The problem I have now is that these 4 holes are a bit to small. I will drill them a 0.5mm size bigger.

Right, so after a month or so of messing about ive finally started on the build and loving it.
The plans are more in depth and better put together than other badlands plans ive seen, I was originally going to make some changes to the design but im now going to trust the plans and make it to spec. (untill next week anyway)

Progress so far is sub frame has been cut and welded, waiting for tube to come in next week then I can get it bent and have some fun with the holesaw...

Need to get my hands on an r1 engine asap.

Ive yet to see anyone make one of these, heres a few pics so far, tell me what you think!
