Concept for a Hayabusa FNR

I have been looking at ways to design a gearbox that is completely gear driven that is specific to the Hayabusa since it is the standard motor used in our buggies and offers the most aftermarket support. This is kind of my ideal setup for an FNR. Where it couples to the motor would be a cush drive unit. This gearbox itself would mount to the engine itself creating one modular unit. The gearbox itself would mount the engine and itself in 3 places making gearbox to engine alignment a non issue. It would also significantly shorten and simplify the entire drivetrain portion. CV output flanges would be kept as narrow and low as possible to maximize travel possibilities. Input shaft would go clear through the box to provide a point of attachment for a alternator setup. Total drivetrain length would be cut down to about 31 inches. Would allow for much shorter trailing arms than we normally run. I am looking for any ideas or insight on this setup. These 3D images are just conceptual and by no means a final product. Just here to convey the idea.

1 3/8 Splined Shaft for Center Carrier

I have an extra splined shaft and coupler that I was going to use for a center carrier. No machining has been done on either piece. I was going to part the coupler in two and weld each into a machined CV cup. I ended up using other bushings and a shaft I already had so I have no need for these now.

Involute Splined Shaft - 10" long 1 3/8" OD 21 tooth spline. Hub City Part #0332-00395

Involute Splined Coupling - 3" long 1 3/4" OD 1 3/8 ID 21 tooth part HC# 0332-00350
Hub City Inc - Non PTO Products

These would work great if you already have some CV cups you want to modify to build a spool set up.

The shaft will go for $75.00
The coupler is $30.00
I will sell both for $100

Buyer pays shipping, they'll fit in a small flat rate USPS box, so shipping would be $4.95 in the U.S.

PM if interested or with questions

Thanks,
I'm asking these ?'s because I've sent several requests to the guys at desertkart and haven't received an answer.
I've finally got it narrowed down between a desertkart frame (going to make it into a two seater) or one of Tut Tech's MK2 frames.

Maaaan, am I glad this forum exists! :)

At SEMA this year, I ran into some King of the Hammers folks (Jessi Combs and Chris Ridgway) and got talking about buggies. Not to mention SEMA just lubes up your wallet-pocket for some reckless spending.

The seed was planted.

I stumbled across a rolling FL250 chassis for $100, and I got the "itch" to build up a budget buggy. So I bought a 2nd FL250 which had the donor-drive-train and some other goodies for $100 and pick it up tomorrow. And my best pal just happened to have a strong running Yamaha ET340 and the rest of the '77 Enticer sled. :D So far $200 invested.

My first plan is just to get the FL250 running with the ET340. Got a a new psiton/ring/gasket set for the motor, fresh plugs, cleaned carb, etc. Tack on another $75 investment. After some welding and some plumbing and wiring and tuning, the ugly-buggy will be ready to for some fun...maybe before Thanksgiving (i've got a couple of very motivated buddies).

The plans for the 2nd frame and axle are to experiment with suspension and disc brakes. We have some spare suspension parts and some spare motorcycle disc brake sets to tinker with, not to mention all kinds of tubing and iron.

If the buggy rides fine, and, we get the brakes and rear suspension to work...the plan is to transfer everything to the better suspension and brakes, test it, tweak it, ride until we break it, fix it, repeat that cycle 6-7 times, tear it apart completely, and then transform the ugly duckling a rolling beauty.

I pre-apologize for any stupid questions. Consider me ignorant. :p

I'm from Perrysburg, Ohio (southern 'burb of Toledo) and I work for Honeywell in supply base purchasing 'stuff' for our brands FRAM, Autolite, and Prestone (no I can't get you free stuff). I'm a U of Toledo mechanical engineer by degree; buyer by day; tinkerer by night/weekend. I love small vehicles and pneumatics, however, last year I did manage to install an adjustable airbag suspension on a "not-so-small" vehicle, a 27,000lb 1979 MCI Crusader 40' bus (our 2nd NASCAR bus). Basically, I like fun projects. However, between grad school, work, and planning a wedding...manly projects are few and far between these days.

I'm looking forward to telling new horror stories, lessons learned, and new excuses for spending more money. [smilie=ecstatic.gi:

These guys make some smoking motors and Ecotec parts.

In my case, the oil filter is a huge PITA to access, and it's only going to get worse once I move my radiator. So, a remote seemed like the way to go. Not only will it add capacity, but make my life much easier.

The Billet oil remote assembly comes with all the o-rings and the wave spring. Its a 3 piece deal that replaces everything inside your little cast oil filter cup. It is made to accept #10 fittings and your cost is $185.00.
P/N is RRE 2-1-0

The owner is Kieth and a real good guy to talk to.

Well I have sold my dirtbikes and started this ambitious project. I've studied this site and FSAE sites for more than a year. I Bought a bunch of steel and street bike parts and got moving. I've had Unsuspended sled and bike powered oval track cars, so I'm not a total Newb, but I'm a plumber, not an engineer. Thank goodness some of you are!
This car will have only 2.5" of wheel travel at all 4 wheels. I'm still designing the rear cage and engine area, based off of what I decide to do with the rear driveline. DBL "A" arms for sure. No differential, just a center inboard brake & sprocket connected by custom u-joint driveshafts and probably Toyota Camry front hubs. (my wheels are 13" with a 5 on 4.5 lug pattern) The car will have a front & rear wing, with the front wing built under the nose, for an F1 or Indy car look and function. Full fiberglass body and side pods, of course.

I may use this 07 CBR1000 engine, or sell it and go with my original choice, YZF-R1. Total completed weight is around 750lbs with no driver.

Have a look and I'm open to all criticisms, comments and suggestions. This suspension style is called pushrod with rockers, or multiplicators. It is simple, really. I hope the heck it performs like it is supposed to. So far, it seems good.

So last night, flipping through craigslist looking for good deals as usual, end up a few states away in the tool section and I come across an ad. 12 foot Wysong air shear and 12 foot Chicago brake for sale, call for more info (no pricing, no pics). I call the guy up, he tells me they were in an old mobile home manufacturing building that went out of business a few years back, been sitting there ever since. The building just got sold and the new owners paid this guy to get rid of whatever was left, which was these 2 big items and a couple radial saws.

I'm thinking, cool, gonna be way outta my price range (seen these shears sell for over 10k, brakes sell for around 9k or more), but i'll go ahead and ask for sh*ts and giggles. The guy says, well, I don't really know what their worth, was hoping someone would tell me, then he says....

wait for it...........

$500 each sound ok?

So just to make sure I heard him right, I say (as calm as I possibly could, and like i'm only partially interested) so 1 thousand dollars for the set? He says yeah, that sound ok? I said, ok, i'll take them, how much do they weigh, and can you possibly load them for me if I get a shipper out there? He says, well, shooting from the hip i'm thinking about 1,000 pounds each, they look pretty heavy?

So yeah, this guy really didn't know what he had (the 8 foot brake I currently have weighs over 3k pounds). I told him I was gonna make a few calls and get shipping setup for tomorrow morning. I got online and found out the brake weighs 3,800 pounds, and the shear weighs 6,300 pounds, so I call the guy back and ask him if someone around there has a big forklift that can handle over 6,300 pounds, and luckily the guy across the street had a 20k forklift and said he'd help him. I called a shipping company last night, paid them up front ($925 for extremely short notice, lol), took them the 1k cash to give the guy, and the trucker left at 3 am this morning, got there are 9 am, and was loaded up and on his way back by 9:30. So, 4:00 rolls around and my 2 new tools just showed up. Already hooked them up and they work awesome, prob. gonna stick a new paint job on them, have some new extensions built for the shear, and i'll be good to go..

As I said, i've heard of this kinda stuff happening to people, but never actually happened to me.............

until now...

over 14 foot long each and hella fun to unload....

930 Drive line for dummies.!

This is my first build. I have a rolling chassis that I got off ebay. Its almost exactly what I had planned to build. A little chop here and re-weld there and I’m good to go. Ive got a few 93 Yamaha FZR 600cc and the mini rail im working on has a 98% complete 2002 Honda F4i. I need the fuel pump, radiator and a few other minor things.
The front end is Done. The rear has Trailing arms, Vw hubs and 930 CV axles. No actual center bearing carrier or drive sprocket.

I understand how the 930 goes together to make an IDS setup. Ive got the outer hubs, the CVs the CVaxle shafts and the inner CVs.
So now im wondering, Where exactly to weld the imaginary center bearing carrier? If its welded in the wrong place, I will bind my CVs and would need plunge axles. So with some math I can figure that part out, I think. The correct arch ect ect. , Gooose flab bla..

What is the 930 Stub shaft used for? Is that the outer part where the wheel hub and wheel bearing attach?

Where are the Center splined shaft coming from? Are they custom machined? Is there an off the shelf shaft?
Next is the two center CV flanges that attach to the splined shaft. As I understand it, if my splined shaft is not the correct length, with fairly close tolerances it will cause compression or stretch in my rear trailing arm geometry. So if I ask Proto or Yoshi to build me one, will they need to know flange to flange OAL, or do they just say hey, its an 8” shaft deal with it?

Has anyone used a 930 Stub for the center shaft? Hell its already got one 930 flange on it. Add to bearings, bearing cases and another 930 flange your good to go.? Right?

Ive emailed Yoshi already, and DesertKarts too, haven’t heard anything back as of yet.
I’m probably going to buy from ProtoDie because he seems to have the best bang for my buck.

Anyhow. Thanks for your help and im looking to being an actual mini rail owner.. PS anyone in the Central Illinois area, let me know. Thanks Don aka justooln2

I have searched quite a bit about electric reverses here and on other forums. I am wondering how well they would work with a steeper gear ratio.

I am thinking of mounting them in front of a transfer case (say 2:1 in low) and rear diff (3.7:1), so including the ring gear, the overall ratio will be in the ~20-30:1 range. I am not concerned about speed in this configuration, but would like the ability to back up on an incline.

I still don't really think this will be enough to pull a 1,200lb buggy back up a hill, does anyone have any experience to say otherwise?

Thanks in advance

Just got a smokin deal on a 13" x 36" Clausing lathe with tons of tooling and a 60 pc. 5C collet set/chuck. Bearings have no play, bed ways have no ridges, gears/screw are sharp, and nothing binds. The old man that sold me the lathe was liquidating his machine shop for retirement and gave me a great deal; all for $800.00

One of the great things about this lathe is that parts are still produced for it!

This is my first one and I am itching to start making some chips. First project will be turning some stub axles for 930 flanges. [smilie=non_banana2:

Buggy was working great about two months ago. Tore everything apart to finish, paint and reassemble to be completely done. When everything was put back together the engine started having some troubles.

As of now, the engine wont start without opening the choke all the way and keeping it there. I fully warmed the engine up and whenever I put the choke back it dies, or if i give it gas, it dies. Two months ago, it would start right up even without opening the choke and ran fine.

Do you think the carbs are gummed up? It has only been sitting for two months and worked fine before. I ran some seafoam through it and will try it today and see if that will help.

Just wanted to get some opinions before I tear apart all the carbs and clean.

Thanks!
I'm learning about each aspect of the system (camber, caster, KPI, scrub, ..... ) but putting it all together is far more complicated than just drawings, especially 2D cad. I will prevail through trial and error BUT will take all suggestions. I have a couple ?'s 1) Can you build your caster into your a-arms by just angling them up in the front as I have seen on some of the designs? 2) Where in the suspension travel would the ride height be? I have an example of my initial design. Am I on the right track? By my calculations there is negitve camber at both top and bottom of travel. Is this correct? Any help would be appriciated.

I recently became the owner of a very old and rather bizarre quad. It was a trade out deal, a father trying to get his roof fixed ( I am a roofer) and he was short on cash. He was told that these bikes were built in the late70's to about 1980. It has a Kohler 8hp motor with a comet cvt drive unit. It's kinda cool, should make a neat camp quad. I decided I'd throw this out there, and see if any of the,"more experienced" gents have any info. It's just a putt-putt, but that's o.k. I am just starting to rebuild my toy collection, so this works. If any one is interested I'll try to figure out how to post pics.[smilie=bs_help.gif]

Hello, I've been reading here for a bit and decided I'd post my project. A little background- My day job- designing turbocharging accessories including a complete line of unique wastegates
Which is an excuse to feed my habit of various projects. We do all of our own machining, fabrication, etc. In my years of accumulation of equipment I've also acquired my own 4x8 CNC plasma torch machine which is hugely responsible for the creation of this project. That and my self designed hydro. bender with inhouse dies.... Blah Blah blah on to the topic at hand Here it is so far- Using a Toyota 1MZ-FE V6 transverse mounted on a 5spd trans. The engine is offset to one side to move the diff into the middle for longer axle travel. Engine is on pass. side and its only about 350lbs, counterbalance will be the gas tank, battery, radiator, transmission, and the driver. Adapting 930 CVs for the inboards with FWD joints on the outboards for now. Front hubs are my design with forks and a king pin spindle. Ford probe rear hubs on A arms, Ford probe rear rotor/spindles on the front. All 1.5" x .120 wall DOM construction (for the most part). All nylon bushings, only heim joints are the tie rods. 22" front travel, not sure on the rear yet. Just got the wheel base setup today, engine is out. Time to box-in and tie everything together.

Just did a search and looked over a lot of pics of spindle designs and have a couple of questions:

1) Should the point where the tie-rod/steering arm attach at the spindle fall in line with the kingpin angle - or in other words should you be able to draw a straight line through all three: the upper spindle mounting point, stearing arm mounting point, and lower spindle mounting point? It would seem having all three in line would reduce or eliminate bump-steer (or does it even make a difference and the only important points are the upper and lower a-arm pounting points at the spindle with proper kingpin inclination). My thinking is you want all three to more or less follow the same arc as they move up and down.

2) what is an idea camber number for playing in the dirt? I've heard 2-3* negative camber is good.

3) should the lower a arm spindle mounting point be in line with the stub axle?

i just got home from the hospital with my girlfriend after a 10 day stay and i have been thinking about my bogging problem the whole time and i was looking on ebay for a carb because we thought that might be my problem but i still havent tried the bigger jet that i bought i tried jetting it smaller with same problem so i was going to jet it fatter and see what that done but while i was on ebay i seen a ground strap that was listed for a 77-84 odyssey 250. my odyssey had a idiot of a owner before me that cut and spliced every freakin wire in the wiring harness so i built a completly new wiring harness from scratch using the factory honda wiring diagram so when i seen the ground strap on ebay i looked at the wiring diagram and it didnt show it so could this be my problem? oh yea by the way im not completly ignorant about wiring or wrenching i have built several show winning hot rods and i know that most of the time if you have a elec problem its usually a ground problem. thanks guys for your input

Well, I purchased the Barracuda in PDF form tonight, but it didn't download (hopefully they are working on that now).

Tony, from The Edge, says the plans call for a 3.5" CLR and 1.5" 1/8" wall minimum on the chassis. The problem is neither JD2 or protools offers a die with 3.5"CLR for 1.5" tubing. The biggest tubing size that has 3.5" CLR is 1.25" and he says 1.25" is too small for the chassis.

Posting this for a friend...

These are used shocks of my X-18 Predator car. They are copies of the Fox 2.0 shocks, and used the same seals etc as the Fox do. I upgraded to 2.5 triple in the rear, and want to upgrade the rear coils also so that is the only reason I am selling these. They have worked great for us. I have three rears available, and two fronts available. I'll take $225 each or sell all five for $850. These have chrome uppers and chrome piggy back reservoirs and twin tube adjusters. I will also sell the rear 2.0 coils, but only after the others are sold. The mounts are anodized black but are starting to fad and look kinda root beer colored now.

John 602-390-9572 located in Scottsdale AZ, can ship at your expense.

Shocks Front: Vogtland Off-Road 10” x 2.0” x 7/8”, Piggy Back Reservoir, Nitrogen Filled

Shocks Rear: Vogtland Off-Road 17” x 2.0” x 7/8”, Piggy Back Reservoir, Nitrogen Filled

MEASUREMENTS : Fronts are 27.5 inches eye to eye extended, and 17 inches compressed
Rears are 45 inches eye to eye extended, and 28 inches compressed

Me and my buddy Mitch were finishing up getting my car prepped for a race this weekend and I noticed something on the trailing arm. Looked like a...

Me and my buddy Mitch were finishing up getting my car prepped for a race this weekend and I noticed something on the trailing arm. Looked like a crack, so I hit it with the wire wheel. Yup, sure enough. The Light Racing square rod end reciever on my outer pivot of my trailing arm had a crack going straight through it. Must have happened in Snowflake. I have no idea for sure how long it was cracked though. I took it on a couple of light abuse cruises after snowflake not even knowing about it. I know some people here have used these so I figured the would appreciate the heads up to keep an eye on these things.

This is the part I am talking about.

Poly Performance Inc.*::*Rod End Hardware*::*Rod End Receivers - Square - JK Synergy Suspension Systems, Fox Racing Shox, Beard, CTM, Johnny Joints®, Currie Enterprises, Edelbrock, Total Chaos, Ramsey Winch, Walker Evans, Wilwood, Mastercraft, CNC Br

The pink line in this picture represents the path of the crack. It didn't show up well in the picture so I had to show it like this.

This pic is of when I originally built these. I added a large fishplate to the side to prevent this kind of failure but it just did it a bit in front of it. I didn't have time to fix it with a new reciever since tech is tomorrow night and the race is Saturday. Not sure I can even replace it without destroying the arm being I have it welded on the inside of the arm. My attempt at a fix for this race was to tig up the crack, tighten the cinch bolt. Weld up the cinch bolt seam/slit to tie it into the other side that wasn't cracked. Then I added a small piece of 1/8" plate to the topside over the seam that I just welded up. Not really any meat to add support to the side. Hopefully that will hold for this race until I have time to come up with a good solution.

I am using a 3/4" reciever incase anyone is wondering. Not saying this is gonna happen to everyone that has these as I am pretty hard on the car. Just a heads up.

Here is that fishplate pic and another view of where it cracked.

I was thinking of running an alternator off my input shaft that I have going to my trans. I got an alternator from a 1991 Geo tracker because it’s small. One question I have is should I run one big auto battery to run everything or one small one for the busa motor and one for the fan and lights. I was going to run the alternator for the second battery that will run the fans and the lights and keep the bike motor all by its self. The next question is on the alternator I have the big wire that goes’s to battery but what do I do with the other two. I know one is an ignition switch and that’s all I need to run Right?

Hey guys and thanks for letting me into the forum. I am big on restoration projects, so this is my first trip into actually building something. I have restored my 1971 Honda Z50 back to probably better than original, Ill post some pics if anyone cares to see, I restored a couple of boats and a 1987 Honda Fourtrax 125 for my daughter. I just purchased a very good running Honda 1986 Fourtrax 350 4x4, and planned on restoring it, but then came across the bugggy idea. My idea at this time is to start with this Honda 350 engine and what ever other parts possible and build a 4x4 4-wheel independent suspension minny buggy. I do want it to be a 2 seater....I've looked at the plans from ubuild it of their 2 seter full suspension buggy. the good thing is the Honda engine has 6 speed forward and reverse and auto clutch which should be ease enought to build a linkage for that. It also has splinned shafts forward and back. Im not sure how to work the drive train though, as the old honda just has the strait axels front and back. So I am wide open to suggestions on that! And staying in what seems to be the moto of this forum I want to keep it as cheap as possible. And I do know that I could probably buy something cheaper, but what fun is that!!! Most of the places this will be ridden is on Forrest roads and trails, so I want to keep the width below 60"
