since you guys were talking about cv axle plunge, and the f150 cvs having 2.5 inches. i noticed that my s-10 axles have 2.5 inches also. so when the axles are installed in the buggy, do you want them plunged in? so to say? because the way mine sit at idle the springyness of the boots kinda pull them arpat. does this make sense?

Voodoo, With your shocks off and as you cycle your suspension through the travel (The amount of travel that would be allowed with the shocks on. You simply removed them so that you can cycle suspension easier) As you cycle it the plunge will in a good system never bottom out the plunge nor try to pull the cv's out of thier races. The plunge is to allow for imperfect suspensions that the distance gets closer and farther away like a typical trailing arm does as it moves. Its simply give to allow for the distance differances. You never want it to hit either extreme in or out. Bill

?? I guess I am confused as to why Tripod joint plunge would be any different than any other CV joint plunge. I know tripods normally do not have the bigger angle ability some other CV's allow but it still stands that you never want the plunge to be bottomed out or pulled against its outer limit?? Did I miss something? Thats all I was trying to say.

In short you should always be able to wiggle the axle a tiny bit at least in a back and forth motion indicating its still got SOME plunge in either direction. If you cannot then your over-extending the axles abilites. If I am wrong please clear me up and explain why.

A tripod has no outer limit, like a caged joint, all it has is the rubber boot...

I see. So it has nothing to stop it. But I guess its still got a limit as to how far it can go before it makes the bad noises.
