If the axles are the proper length, why would you need a clip to keep them from mushrooming the ends? It shouldn't be long enough to put pressure on the ends right?

If you use a custom stub axle it will. Now whether it fits inside a chevy outer CV is another question. Custom stub axles are quite pricy. Fitting it into a stock outer CV is the idea of this thread because it eliminates all that cost in favor of off the shelf components.
