I have been working on an idea to use a VW Jetta trany mated to a cbr 600 motor. I took one of the stock [inner] cv's off and it has the same axle spline as type 2 and 4. It looks like it may have a good amount of angular travel. It is the older 90mm cv. I read you can interchange to 100mm output flanges. Does anyone know anything about these cv's? Tim

I don't have a clue - but this link might give you some info - it's the Blind Chicken Racing link that seems to pop up when ever there's a CV question.

Good stuff Tooltime. What year Jetta tranny are you looking at? How much room is there to put a larger flange? The old rabbit tranny (mid 80s I believe) I had had Type 1 CV's and there was not enough room to go with ANY larger flanges as the diff was so close to the rest of the tranny. I was told the jetta used larger of the same year but am trying to learn more about newer years yet.
Just a side note: Audi uses larger flanges and is German based. The flanges off an Audi (If found easily) will likey fit the splines as well. Different Audis used different CVs but they tended to be larger. Might be an axle source as well? Bill

The INNER Cv's on Audis are what I am refferring to. They are just like VW (old school bolt on CV's). The outers Do have built in stubs but the axle splines may be of use. (Unless a person could use the outer stub in thier design??)
I was thinking using Audi inner parts and common VW outer parts as they are common. Bill

The trany I have is a 86. The 87 has 100mm. It looks like there is room. I pulled an output flange from a VW bus trany, hoping it would fit. No such luck. I will find the flange from a 87 or later. Thanks for the help guys. Tim

Here is a pic of the Audi Diff (long sucker aint it?) Then I took a pic of the flange which measures 3 15/16 inches (or 99.4mm) Then I had to snap a pic of the diff loc lever. Onne way its an open diff. the other its lokced. (Note Not ALL Audi Quattros have this. Most do not have the locking feature.) This unit is a little older (Early 90's???) Bill
The newer Audis out are supposed to have even larger cv's. I have been told this but cannot promise it.

ya i was just looking, looks like audi has had 90mm, 100mm and 108 mm at one time or another, funny thing is when i find my cv's, 26 spline race on the outer, the inners are 30 or 33, doesnt look like they matched end for end....So that shoots that idea to hell, lol. unless new axles are fabbed up anyways...

The cv's I have are 33 spline, same as type 1,2,4[thing,924,944]. The inners bolt on. Are yours 26 spline on both ends. Also, does anyone know about the BMW cv's that Rorty recomends? What is the spline count? Are the newer ones the same as the old ones? I found new cv's for 30 bucks on ebay.Tim
