There is a few reversers out there that use planetaries. Not a "stupid idea" at all. It would be great to have a compact reverser using common tranny parts.
Ever seen a Top Fuel car back up?? Lenco planetary reversers are used on T/A , T/F, and lots of other other drag cars.
