Default sno mo gear box

howdy all, just need to pick some brains for info and expertise, was wondering about a snowmobile gear box jack shaft setup, only shorting shaft so secondary is sitting on the box and then getting hole cut on other side of case with longer shaft made for 930 cvs will give me a box with reverse as will be using sno mo engine and running gear will it last in two seat buggy around (just guessing)1200lbs ya, nay, thanks for the input

A snow mobile case will not work like you suggest above.

One side of the case is just a cover. The other side has the bracing and mount for ONE bearing at the drive section down low. And one bearing up high where power comes in. Reverse cases have the reverse setup but these two main shafts are only supported by one ebaring IN THE CAE in most units..

The other bearing for that lower shaft is clear across the sleds belt tunnel. This other bearing is what stabilizes the lower shaft in the case. Keeps it running straight for the chain in the case.

Much like the upper shaft on new sleds is long to stabilize it. With a bearing over by the driven clutch.

Now if you CUSTOM made a case for the cover side AND the rest of the case was able to deal with the load the custom side cover MIGHT hold a bearing with a shaft coming out of it. But a lot of work and a lot of moeny that may not pay out.

BUT sled gearcases are not geared deep either.

As far as the sled gearcase is concerned the tire it sees is the size of that thing driving the track (the drive bogey)

If its ten inches in diameter (easy number for numbers sake) then you either need a ten inch wheel or another way to gear it down for the diameter tire you have.

And most of the drive bogeys are not that big. So the gearing issue would be worse.

Sorry but it definitely won't work like you have proposed. As nutz pointed out the case cannot support the shafts on its own, and also the way the gears are configured inside does not allow the output shaft to pass through them to the other side. Also, the main reason is they do not have enough gear reduction for a buggy. Most only do around 2:1 reduction, when any buggy is going to need at least 4:1 reduction if not more.

See my thread here Rebuilding Baja SAE car into Stadium Lite for how I integrated a reversing sled chaincase into my buggy. I made a 4:1 reduction chain box after the sled chaincase for a total gear reduction of around 8:1.

Jumpin knows about RPM's.

Hes thinking and hoping (aint we all) for a gearbox with reverse for under 500 bucks.

Prob is even IF a Sled case was out there that could handle what he wants to do by the time you do all the mods you WOULD be at an RPMS price nearly. ANd the ratio would still be wrong. Just not enough room in them to make the drop in any sled case I have seen for buggy size tires.
