Hi wayneski, Sorry I have not got any pics and I have decided not to go this route, not because it will not work but because one of the suspension mounting points is where my engine needs to be! Its quite simple, just use a front wheel drive tranny from a toyota or vw car (toyota mr2 would be good because its rear/mid engined so the control cable is going in the right direction) and connect the motorcycle output shaft to the gearbox in put shaft, it would also be good to get one of those rubber donut drives in the link between the bike output and the cer tranny.
Oh, but do not use a reverse rotation honda tranny or you will have 6 forward gears and 30 reverse gears ![]() |

Hi, i have a corolla gt fwd gearbox sitting in the back yard i wAs thinking of using on my first build to save some dough. i was also thinking of using the cv's and hubs off the corolla as it is a 100kw(130hp) motor. I was wondering about the size and other probs any one might now of. By the way i'm from west os. most people seam to run edge buggies over here.

As is the case with any mass produced car parts, they will be big and heavy compared to low volume items built for racing.
Take for example a RPM FNR box against a front wheel drive car trans, the costs are worlds apart but they will both do the job, reduce the gearing ratio and give you a reverse in fact you can change ratio whilst driving with the car tranny where you will need to spend more money to change ratios on the RPM (or any other FNR box)Also you have a diff on the car tranny (I know some FNR box,s do also like the quaife) and going off my own personal experiance I would not build a buggy without a diff and fiddle brakes even in our often muddy conditions but if you do not want a diff it can easily be welded up. It is the same with many parts like cv,s hubs brakes, steering etc and I think with the technical know how you could build a buggy for a fraction of the cost of one built using "specialist" parts and it be 90% as good/fast. 2 areas I would spend some money are shocks and harness, I have relatively cheap fox air shocks on one of my buggys and I know I could get better, but worth the cost over shocks from a car. And do not think car parts are any less strong than specialist parts, they will have had a lot more R+D than any low volume parts. |

Cost is a major factor for me. I know the box will take the grunt from the YZF600 motor, i was a bit worried about the drive shafts. Blokes over here are using the expensive ones and having trouble with them, but they are running busa gear. If i get too worried about the extra kilos I could always stop stuffing burgers in my gob.
I spose some one has to try it, I'll give the 'rolla drive shafts a go. Cheers |
