Default Manco Dingo retrofit

Not really a buggy I know, but I know there is more than enough talent and experience here to give me a few pointers.

Here's a mock up of what I'm trying to do

I need some help figuring out how the secondary pulley should go in a configuration like this. It's a live axle, so I'm thinking I will need to relocate the sprocket to the right side and run a jackshaft over. The only problem is that will put 10 inches of spinning death near my left arm / ear. In order to keep the c.g. low I'd like to avoid mounting the engine any higher than the mockup, although I might have to in order to get the belt tight enough. Any experiences with tight quarters like this are appreciated.

Thanks,
Everett

Here's a crude sketchup overlay of what I was thinking. Seems as though getting the chain to clear the exhaust will be a problem. I might be able to swing it out of the way... Look viable?

Low viability because you'll need to carry the shaft on both sides of the sprocket and provide for some tensioning too. Look at the chain tensioner on SpeedPartz.com as it might help if sufficient space is available.

Chop the pipe and move it. It's not going to hurt performance since it is not a performance piece.

Build a big guard to protect yourself from the chain. Could be a massacre.

Oh, I was wondering about that... so these old school cans aren't tuned? I didn't think you could run a 2 stroke without a tuned pipe. Thanks for your input.

Looks to me that you might have some problems with the front end and steering being to light with that set up.

Two smokes will run w/o tuned pipes, but the don't run well.

You can probably do a little research and take the engine displacement that you have and find an "appropriate" two stroke pipe (or two - that's a twin.) and rework it (them) to clear the drive train idea and give you more hp.

Or, as Gene says, chop the pipe and work from there....

On the setup you have now, the most important aspect of the exhaust tuning will be the header - it's where the system's going to get most of it's power. Try to keep it as "stock" as possible. - you can cut wedges out of one side and weld them back into the other if you need to angle the pipe a different way for clearance. Just make sure that both of those header pipes stay as close to the same to each other as possible. If you end up getting them different from each other the performance will suffer severely.

I'm with Gene, chop the pipe and get it out back. With the pipe and muffle that close your back will get pretty hot on long runs.

If you want to take your ride to it's limits and add suspension here is an idea for you.

Thanks, yeah I've read that thread a few times. I'm not sure if the 5 HP Dingo is different than the 8HP as far as the frame goes. It looks smaller to me, but it may just be the tires. Anyway... I got my parts in and I think I'm going to have to extend the frame about 12" to center the engine weight over the axle. I am going to have to think about what I'm gonna do about the hot exhaust as well. Tell me what you think of this setup... Imagine the Tires being back further and the large sprocket on the other side.
