Default Shorting axle 3/8

I'm getting to the end of the rebuilt, and like always I found out the hard way I make mistake, my axle are too short.
The axle I have are 17"and 1/8 roughly and what I need is around 18", the 18 3/4 may work but I can be sure at 100% until I have them installed.
I install my 17 1/8 with spacer and they have plenty of room, the ball ride right in the middle of the CV in most of the cycle.
From what I can see It seems to be the best set up.
So my question is, the axles I'm looking for have Long splines, 2", way longer that what I need, I was thinking to cut 3/8 on both end, to come up with of a total reduction of 3/4 and re-grove.
They may work without doing so but just in case.
Do you guys thinks it can be done, what can of cutting tools will you recomend to do the job, as well as cutting speed ?
I was so confident I have the measurement right , better stop drinking while working, wait , didn't do it, so better start then lol DOHHH ( Homer voice in the back )

What you wanna do is fine. Cut them, and regroove on a lathe, then clean the splines on the end with a small triangle file. I think you can safety cut over 1" off each end with as much spline is usually there...

Shortening them on the lathe can be hard on tooling. The easiest way is to cut them close with the chop saw taking care not to get them to hot. Then clean up in the lathe. For the snap ring groove, We have a die grinder mounted on a quick change tool holder. Use a correct thickness blade for the clip you have.

That's what I meet, cut them, then regroove on the lathe, but I see how it could have been read incorrect the way O wrote it.

Here we do not use coolant in any of our machine, it create a mess, and 99% of the time we don't need it, si what ever I do I have to do it "dry", brush and cutting oil.
I take careful measurement it appear that it will work like this but with my luck, I hope this time my "mistake " will only end up by having to buy "brand new axles" instead of using the Porsche one...
I'm working all the details and this is killing me...gonna have have a big give away when it's all done

As everyone has said yes you can cut them.
Be very careful to keep them cool as you cut them do not let them get over hot when cutting.

If you don't have the set up maybe check with a local metal shop or warehouse and see if they have a wet saw or band saw (industrial) that would not mind cutting them.

Clean the splines, put a groove back in, taper the end again so cv's slide back on nicely and your
all set.

At my old work we have cut almost up to a 1/2 inch off of both sides on a wet chop saw, re grooved for the C-clip, turneded the end to a nice taper on the lathe and cleaned out the splines with an actual Spline File. A file that has the grooving built into the file to file to the exact same setting as the splines.

Anyways I have heard of many people doing this and you should be fine just be careful.
Let us know how it all works out.

As for the big sale just save everything for your next project.

Also ,i would add, might be a good idea to remeasure everything one more time to be absolutely sure before you cut. There are several previous posts about the best way to do this and maybe keep from overlooking something.
If it were me i would get someone else to confirm my measurements before cutting.
