Your buggy had a keyed shaft. Have you seen Protodie's setup?

http://www.protodie.com/images/Rear%...20KIT%20bg.JPG

The sprocket bolts to the flange on the left like the rotor does on the right. That will give the sprocket a nice surface to seat against, especially nice for a split sprocket. That's a nice piece of work.

Contact Jody for more information.

I've been doing some research on the best chain drive for my application, but here's another question, how does one have reverse with one of these setups if the motorcycle engine/tranny combo has no reverse?

Good one Livewire! lol

Heres some picture food for thought. Some who use electric starters for reverse. Some have put them right on the spool with CV's on it but they say they tend to be to fast backing up and they are one speed (Whatever the motor can push it) These pics show a way you could do it (Its not my buggy I just thought the reverse setup was worth noting IF you HAD to go electric starter) This way gives some gearreduction that may be desireable.

The other thing to look at is this thread.

Just an old fart from Florence Oregon

If you don't wanna go any of these ways with a big motor you gotta spend the bucks on a nice RPM or Jeffco or the like.

Or invent a new way to do it and share it with us!

Gene,

Yeah that sounds right to me exactly the same setup i had!
the other option I have is buying a shaft driven motorbike engine and then either just having that drive one wheel or try and find a small differential but here in England buggy parts are very rare or you just have to improvise!

Can you suggest how I can get hold or a diff that will be light weight and small?
And would you post some pictures or direct me to some pictures or some custom buggies so i can get a little bit of inspiration?

cheers

Livewire, that is great! It's pretty much what I was thinking, I guess reverse isn't that important anyway, going forward (fast as possible) is where the action is right?

Steve,
Check the Projects in Progress section for detailed build pics on various style cars. There are several GB members here including Lee1969GB, Hambone and several others and they could be good "local" resource and support.

The only place where no reverse on a buggy is ok is sand. Even then. If you never park your nose in a crowd of friends you might not need it but some fool will always block you in. While climbing sand hills you have to know when to give up (not dig holes) so you can roll back down the hill. Plus you will have to push it on or off the trailer. (If you can winch it on backwards this aint so bad.)

Anywhere else reverse is golden. In the woods to turn around you might have to go forward and backwards four or five times just to get around. Plus if you have never been in a buggy with no reverse you gottta remember you have to undo the seatbelt, get out, lug 600 to 1000 plus pounds around (maybe more than once. An you BEST HOPE its on smooth ground or that weight seems like A LOT MORE!!!!). Then get back in and strap yourself down. Try doing this a few times and see how long it takes. Its longer than you think. If your buddy has reverse he will be turned around before you can get out and grab the frame usually. Plus he will not be tired out.

Ever come up to a ridge in Glamis and go to take a quick looksy to check it out and realize that would be a very bad idea? Reverse is kinda important!

I'm an east coaster (for now) and have never been to Glamis. My reward for finishing my ody turned mini rail will be a trip out there with my quad and friends in tow, maybe I'll get to meet some of the members that have helped me so much when I'm done!
