I have never used Alibre but I use SolidWorks at home and my last two jobs have both used SolidWorks as the 3D cad platform of choice. *It is pretty easy to use compared to other 3D modeling programs and has all the capabilities you should need for a buggy.

If you are a student and have a University Email address you can obtain a free 1 year subscription to the latest copy of Autodesk Inventor Professional (Student Copy) and it has the stress analysis tools (ANSYS). They also have tutorials and stuff on their site. Inventor is somewhat similar to Solidworks also.

http://students4.autodesk.com/

There is other Autodesk software available too like Autocad Electrical, 3ds Max (I think), and some others.
