My checks at the dunes didnt red flag anything. Mind you they where quick checks but checks none the less. The recitifer checked fine, the voltage seemed on par for what was running and nothing really seemed to be malfunctioning. So unless I just got a bad battery (which has never happened in the history of batteries ) I'll have to dig deeper in to the charging system. This will be after the replacement battery arrives thou.

The stator could have a short that only happens intermittently. as it grows in size with heat the short occurs and goes away whwn cool.Just a possibility. My buddy with the electric motor rebuild shop has seen it happen on many alternators.

When you get that new battery check it out for a FULL charge before you install.Often overlooked but important.

I will charge it fully before its installed.
Would a bad stator fail a battery. I could see it killing a rectifier but not the battery. Am I missing something.
Also the battery didnt just drain down like the stator wasnt charging it just completely died, no warning at all. Seems to me it would give some indication of the problem.

It is possible for rectifier to be overcharging the battery and burn up an internal battery connection strap.Instant death. It could also just be a weak internal battery connection strap that failed also.I assume the battery that failed will not take any charge ,right? I'm just offering ideas as to what could be the cause.

My test at the dunes said it was putting out 14.something with the car running. That is when it would run, when it was dead the battery was dead.
And yes with the battery sitting on the bench it will not take a charge. It reads 13 volts unloaded but any load drops it to zero.

May sound obvious but check all the wiring for bad connections etc. Loaded wire can often over heat and make itself brittle inside the insulation where you can't see it broked and corroded. Solder fill all of your connectors with a mini torch. Also insure your battery is grounded to BARE metal on the chassis and the motor. So often the little stuff in electrical gremlins is overlooked and I just needed to throw that out there as a reminder.

Next to a good battery good grounds are second most important in any car. Also make sure the cable ends and the metal block or frame is clean clean clean. And here in Oregon I like to coat all bare metal contact surfaces with a thin film of synthetic grease to prevent the air(salt we ride next to the Pacific) from oxidizing everything. Just because your motor is bolted directly to your frame don't be afraid to run a ground cable to both the block and the frame. It is a good safeguard
