Default Vw..Hard to get in to gear..

On my vw rail it is hard to find any gear due to the shifter bein so sloppy. I seen yesterday tha the ball is jumping out of the cup on the shift linkage. Could I just weld a bead around the top of the cup to bulid it back up again? Or would I have to get a new linkage?
